Mark Trumble
The following link is a vote for ALL VATCAN members on if we as a division should leave TeamSpeak and go to discord. Note this is your vote and duplicate votes will not be accepted. Voting will be open until Sunday August 12th, at that point, all votes will be tallied and the decision will be made. Should we move to a Discord server, it would not be an immediate suspension of the VATCAN TeamSpeak, there would be a set date for the downing of the TeamSpeak server. Should you have any questions please e-mail me at m.trumble@vatcan.ca. Link for the poll: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JVCZXFY
Jeff McMillan
If we vote yes? Would it be a trial period to make sure it works and everyone is happy before deciding to cancel TS? Travis Chan
I guess the most immediate question is what is the purpose of the proposed change? Are we currently having issues with teamspeak? What are the advantages of switching platforms? It’s very difficult to vote on something without any context. Dean Roy
I have to agree with the above. We have a system that is working perfectly fine. What is the point of a switch? It seems to be there are a lot of other issues the exec should be working on as opposed to fixing something that isn't broken. 1394209
I agree with Travis and Dean. I don't see why you should fix what isn't broken. I don't feel the Discord and Teamspeak servers should be of high priority in VATCAN's issues. Richie Queally VATéir C1
1157247
Change for Change sake rarely results in progress. Other than a fancier UI and a "Chat Feature" what are the tangible benefits of moving to a new platform. A "VOTE or POLL" at this stage is premature and may result in a decision based on personal preferences and interpretations of "FEATURES" rather than one based on facts and needs. I agree with Dean, and others, there are far more critical items all of us including the VATCAN Executive should be addressing. Besides, Teamspeak 5 comes Q4 2018, let's look at that! Nathan Power
Allow me to make this very clear: there will NOT be any changes made without a very clear vote in favour of switching to a new platform. For the time being, and likely the near future, TeamSpeak will remain the normal method of communication for VATCAN. However, due to recent and past technical issues involving that server, we believe that is worth asking the question, just to get a basic opinion from the public. Travis Chan
Thanks Nate for the clarification, wasn't aware of what the reasoning was for the switch and good to know it won't be implemented without a clear buy in. ;) Travis Chan (1402756) Deputy Division Director t.chan@vatcan.ca
1314427
I agree with what other VATCAN members are saying. Let me remind everyone of two principles that should be thought of before implementing this: [*]K.I.S.S. Principle [*]If it ain't broke, don't fix it. In the instance of using both principles in one thought, VATCAN should be keeping everything as simple as can be. We don't want to have a various amount of non-essential issues to be looked at in the beginning of the VATCAN Executive team with a couple new faces. We want important issues addressed first; FIR vacancy's, events, membership, GDPR compliance. Just to name a few... Summing up what everyone said. If this vote is successful, we should have a trial period afterwards for Discord to see if VATCAN members are comfortable with this system, as this is a divisional communications server. This change (in my opinion) is nothing other than to spice up the visual look of our internal/external communications, which leads to the question of what are the pros and cons of using Discord vs. TeamSpeak? If the matter is that the server is unreliable, and it doesn't work up to par with what it should be, move the server to somewhere more reliable but at the same time cost-effective. If necessary, as I have said before in my personal mailings, appoint/elect a national webmaster role to address these issues, as they should be fixed by someone who has the knowledge of how to do so. Again, this is just to see what VATCAN thinks, there have been prior issues with Teamspeak. This is just us looking to see if it would be worth it to consider a change. At this point I am locking this thread to prevent bias among future voters. If you have any questions or concerns you would like clarified, please e-mail me at m.trumble@vatcan.ca.
